Today South Cambridgeshire District Council announced their short list of candidates to take on running the Park. This is the text of their press release:
Short-list could secure future for Milton Country ParkA final short-list of potential charities to take over Milton Country Park has been drawn up by South Cambridgeshire District Council (SCDC).
The National Trust, Cambridge Sports Lakes Trust and the Cambridge Preservation Society have all been selected for the short-list which was decided after interviews and consultations with the charities. All three come with highly regarded reputations and local experience.
The National Trust runs Wicken Fen and Anglesey Abbey and its Wicken Fen Vision extends to land near the park. Cambridge Sports Lakes Trust is raising funds for an Olympic size rowing lake and triathlon centre neighbouring the Park and their team has experience in running parks. The Cambridge Preservation Society has been protecting green space around Cambridge for 80 years and already runs country parks around Cambridge.
All three of the charities will need continued support from those who know and care for the park to make sure that its future is secure.
Cllr Vicky Ford, resources portfolio holder said, "I could not be more delighted to be discussing the park's future with such an outstanding group of organisations. They have vast experience in running parks and like SCDC they are all deeply committed to trying to protect and enhance our open spaces around Cambridge. They would each bring skills to not only save the park but also to enhance it. However I do know that they are all charities and will need substantial support from the supporters of the park in order to meet the ongoing costs.
"We'd like to thank everyone who has supported Save Milton Country Park, the Friends of Milton Country Park and all of these charities who have put a huge amount of work to bring us to this stage. SCDC will contribute a large donation to help ensure it can be handed over successfully. Over the next few weeks we hope to work with these three charities to find out which can provide the best long term solution to protect the park."
As Cllr Ford says "they are all charities and will need substantial support from the supporters of the park in order to meet the ongoing costs" so our Pledge for the Park campaign continues.
